Fashion is an Investment
Like many of you, the need to organize and simplify my life rolls around every year in January. My closet is the first thing I tackle before this feeling fades. I actually look forward to the project even though it is a big one and also total chaos.
The first thing is to pull EVERYTHING out and clean from top to bottom. By the way, did I mention it is a good thing to have your favorite playlist going? The right music keeps me moving along.
The next step is to inspect each piece and then start three separate piles: one for consignment, one for donation and one to discard.
Once this is complete we move onto my favorite step-- putting it all back together! Before it goes back in the closet, it gets a good once over with a clothing brush and a spritz of fabric fresh. A good clothing brush is one of the best investments you can make. It gently, yet effectively, removes lint, fuzz, pills, hair, and fur leaving your item looking neat and clean.
As far as getting everything back in the closet, I love to use huggable hangers like the ones from Joy Mangano. They are narrow so my things are not crowded, plus nothing slips off and ends up on the floor.
Everyone has their method of organizing, but mine is by color. I start with the sleeveless items and progress to long sleeve within each color story.
When it comes to folded items like sweaters and jeans, I fold in half and then in thirds. I also like to stack them side by side as opposed to on top of each other. That way nothing topples over.
Same goes for sweaters!
It may seem strange, but I love to enjoy my things for a long time. Each season when I pull out my cashmere sweaters, it is like greeting an old friend. Corny? Maybe, but it is also comforting. By taking excellent care of them I know I am preserving my investment. The Laundress products featured in this blog will extend the life of your wardrobe.
Next up...organizing my accessories. UGH!!!
Until next time,
