Telling Your Story with Charms

The wearing of charms, whether on a necklace or as a bracelet, has a very long history. Starting back in medieval times, they were worn to ward off evil spirits or bad luck.

Today they are a stylish way to tell your personal story and they become very meaningful over time. My grandmother had a wonderful charm bracelet that she wore frequently. Two of my fondest memories of her are her wonderful laugh and the soft jingling sound of her charm bracelet. She added a charm for each of her grandchildren and they were then passed down to us. Although I have many wonderful charms that signify events and travels, this is the one I treasure the most.

Charms allow you to tell your personal story whether marking a significant event-- such as a marriage, graduation, the birth of a child or travel-- or offering an inspirational or aspirational reminder for you.

Commemorating these moments, experiences, and aspirations through charms allows you to share yourself through your jewelry. Not only are the resulting bracelets and necklaces beautiful, they are meaningful, which is why I am such a big fan.

With so many charms to choose from it is hard to know where to start. My advice, start with one you love. Something that represents who you are, where you have traveled, what your dreams are, someone special. I could go on but I think you get the idea. It is easy to start, just choose one that speaks to you and go from there. It is always fun to see what the next addition will be.

Some of my favorites to start with include:
