A Real Life Fairytale

So, did you watch ‘the wedding’? Although I did not watch it live, I have to admit I was completely smitten with the pomp and ceremony of the royal wedding. I mean, who doesn’t love a real life fairy tale involving a beautiful bride and her handsome groom?

With all the media attention given to the event I started thinking about wedding gifts. What in the world would be an appropriate for a royal couple?

Exotic Gifts

New South Wales has named a koala pair Harry & Meghan after the couple and an Indian bull has been adopted in their honor by PETA India. While I may not be able to help with such exotic choices, I do have some advice for weddings for the common people.

How much should I spend?

How much to spend on a wedding gift is a question that comes up frequently. The answer is, there is no rule. On average people spend between $60.00 and $200.00 on a gift. Your relationship with the couple should be your guide.

Do I bring the gift with me to the wedding?

It is best not to take a gift to the ceremony. It becomes a bit of a burden to transport them, cards can fall off and gifts can disappear. The best practice is to send the gift ahead of time or soon after the wedding.

Do I have to buy a wedding gift from their registry?

Is it okay to go off the registry is another question. The answer is yes on this one. Perhaps everything on the registry in your price range has been purchased already or you just want to buy something else. It is, however, a good idea to take a look and see what they are registered for to give you an idea of their taste. When going off-registry, a great choice is going with something you can have engraved. A lovely frame or bowl to mark their special day is a meaningful gift that will be cherished for a lifetime.

Is it wrong to give cash as a gift?

While I am certain no one is going to turn down cash, the choice is up to the giver. If you decide to go this route remember to include a handwritten note with your well wishes for the couple.

Focus on a thoughtful, meaningful gift and you won’t go wrong.
